RUN WAY DOWN SOUTH THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!
In addition to the MTB race, we have also added a Trail Run to our calendar! On December 22nd, Sami Hall in Bredasdorp hosts an unforgettably beautiful and challenging trail run in the Heuningberg mountains. The trails are stunning, and only open to the public for the race day, so don’t miss out!
The Sami Hall in Bredasdorp is the location for the start and finish of the Trail Run. 25km(CHIEFS) & 15km(INDIANS)
Starting from the SAAMI-HALL, a gentle flattish gravel road section will allow the runners to start up the legs comfortably and at the same time give the racing rabbits an opportunity to speed up ahead of the first single track section that starts after 1 km. For the next 1 km runners will enjoy the fresh smell of Blue gum along with negotiating slightly rocky terrain behind town.
A sharp right turn after a dropper covered wooden bridge @ km 2.3 will lead the runners into the kloof. This is a very exciting section that will be the first challenge of the day as it will test both the legs and upper body strength up, over and under various obstacles as you now start to climb about 183 m over a distance of 1.6 km. To add to the adrenaline rush an element of water will also play a part and runners are warned against slippery conditions in places.
When the thick vegetation finally opens up, the trail will bring you to a T where you will turn LEFT, now on fairly flat and gently rolling terrain – time for the speedsters to switch on the diesel motors. With views down mountainsides both left and right now runners will have a hard time concentrating as the scenery is something to behold. At the 4.5km sign, the 25 km CHIEFS will carry on STRAIGHT and the 15km INDIANS will turn RIGHT.
The 25km CHIEFS will now enter an area atop the mountain that will bring into sight Bredasdorp to the left and 270° views to the right towards Struisbaai, L’Agulhas & Elim. A fast twisting downhill section, all on single track will take you to the backend of Heuningberg. Soon you will get the PULPIT in sight – a well known famous landmark in our area. The rest of the trail towards the finish will boast more of the same fantastic views, surprises and excitement – believe me you will be in awe! After 15 km in on the long route, the CHIEFS meet up again with the 15 km INDIANS and share the remainder of the route until the finish.
Extra Notes for the 15km INDIANS
After turning RIGHT at the 4.5 km sign, the INDIANS will enjoy lovely ups and downs, crossing 2 little streams, all the while zig-zagging through beautiful fynbos. A lovely section along an escarpment will bring them to their 10 km sign where they will meet up again with the 25 km CHIEFS and will share the remainder of the trail until they finish - CHIEFS however will enjoy full freedom of the route and subsequently all INDIANS will jump out of the way when ordered so by a CHIEF :)....just joking, good manners will prevail but NO HOLDUPS please, thank you!
7 km Trail Run
Never was a short Trail run ever gonna be this much WOW! Starting off on a lovely gravel road to get the engine going, runners will go up a steep but short little section of the Soetmuisberg before turning right again on to milder and much easier terrain. Coming with lovely views all around, Bredasdorp will shine in the morning sun. Quickly all civilization will be a thing of the past when going down into a gorge. Crossing a small stream numerous times amongst thick bushes, the runners will slowly and subtly gain a bit of height. The top of the run will be reached at 5 km there-after it's all downhill with a view to die for - be sure to have the camera handy. This little gem of a trail can just as well be walked...if time catches up, the exit route at 4.5 km can be taken, making it only a 5.4 km outing...but don't do that! 🙂
Now come, all of you, young and old, the well fed, the skinnies, the lazies, the hangoverines, the challengers and even Blue Bulls...pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag and smile, smile, smile....this one is for you!!!
Good luck, have fun and ENJOY!
